More than 1.8 million vehicles were checked by radar in one month on the Vasco da Gama Bridge, with 273 infractions recorded, 10 of which were very serious, for driving over 181 kilometers per hour, according to the GNR.
Between 00:00 on June 15 and midnight on July 15, a total of 273 infractions were detected, namely 10 very serious (181 Km/h or more), 134 serious (151 Km/h to 180Km/h), 129 light (121 Km/h to 150 Km/h).
According to a statement issued to mark the first month of the installation of the average speed cameras on the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the GNR indicates that the highest speed limit recorded was 246 Km/h.
The GNR specifies that in one month a total of 1,812,881 vehicles have been checked and 273 infractions detected, namely 10 very serious (181 Km/h or more), 134 serious (151 Km/h to 180Km/h) and 129 light (121 Km/h to 150 Km/h).
The Guarda Nacional Republicana (National Republican Guard) said that from 06:00 until 09:00 today, a road inspection operation was underway to control speed on the Vasco da Gama Bridge, from north to south.
Since June 15, the Vasco da Gama Bridge has had average speed cameras to reduce accidents, increase traffic flow and help eradicate illegal racing.
On June 12, the GNR and the concessionaire Lusoponte signed a cooperation protocol to put speed cameras into operation on the bridge over the River Tagus, which connects the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal.
In the note, the GNR, which is responsible for traffic control and planning on 97% of the mainland’s road network, advises motorists to comply with the legally established speed limits and to adjust their speed to the weather conditions, the state of the road and the volume of road traffic
It also recommends avoiding maneuvers that could embarrass traffic or in any way lead to accidents, and driving attentively, cautiously and defensively, helping to reduce road accident rates.
