The woman claimed she was unable to look after the animal.
A55-year-old woman was arrested on Monday on suspicion of abandoning a pet in the parish of Marvila, in Lisbon.
In a statement sent to the press on Wednesday, the Public Security Police (PSP) explained that officers were contacted to go to a veterinary clinic “because a canine was found there that appeared to be lost”.
The animal’s chip was scanned and the officers went to the owner’s house, who informed them that the dog was hers, but that she wasn’t available to stay and look after it, so she decided to abandon it on the public highway.
After being warned several times that her actions amounted to a crime of animal abandonment, the woman reiterated her will, which led to her arrest.
The suspect was summoned to appear at the Public Prosecutor’s Office, to be heard in first interrogation for the application of a coercive measure.
