A Portuguese citizen, 46 years old, who was on the run from French justice, after conviction to an effective sentence for pedophilia, was arrested in the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto, district of Braga, told the police source today.

In a statement, the GNR Territorial Command of Braga says that “following an investigation into the suspicion of a man who is a fugitive from French justice,” military personnel from the post of Cabeceiras de Basto proceeded to arrest the man on Friday, in compliance with a European Arrest Warrant (EAW).

A police source explained to Lusa that the GNR received an anonymous tip indicating the presence of the suspect in the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto, adding that the man had been sentenced to an effective sentence for crimes related to pedophilia committed in France.

The GNR also refers in the statement that the man was arrested, constituted an accused and presented to the Court of Appeal of Guimarães (TRG) for application of measures of coercion.

The TRG ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody and gave five days for the detainee’s defense to file an appeal, the same police source said.
