Students in the 9th grade obtained better results this year in the national Portuguese tests, but their performances worsened in the Mathematics exam, when compared to their colleagues who took them last year.
In Portuguese, the average score of the 1st phase of the final cycle tests held this year was 61%, while last year it was 55%, according to data made available today by the National Examination Board.
In Mathematics, there was a slight decrease in the national average, which went from 45% to 43%, both negative averages.
In the Portuguese test, about 78.2% of students scored positive, while in Mathematics (92), the majority of students (58%) scored negative.
However, the average of Mathematics shows higher dispersions of scores (standard deviation of 27), compared to Portuguese (standard deviation of 16).
For example, in Mathematics there were many more students with zero scores (3,131), but also many more with 20 scores (726), while in Portuguese, only eight students had zero scores and only 57 had the maximum score.
Almost 200,000 final tests of the 3rd cycle were held in 1,217 schools, with 57 schools holding the tests electronically.
The final electronic test for Portuguese was taken by 3,481 students and the Mathematics test by 3,005 students.
Due to the small number of students, the tests of Portuguese as a Non-Mother Tongue and Portuguese as a Second Language took place in all schools and for all students in digital format.
“Overall, this pilot was carried out by 6,622 students,” the tutelage said in a statement.
The tests were marked by 4,242 teachers, but involved around 10,000 invigilating teachers and school exam secretaries.
