Household, corporate and government debt rises to 804.4 thousand ME in May

The indebtedness of the non-financial sector (public administrations, companies and individuals) increased by 8,814 million euros in May, year-on-year, to 804,444 million euros, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) said today.

Compared with April, this indicator advanced by €1.622 billion, according to a statistical information note published today on the central bank’s website.

At the end of May, private sector debt stood at €440.567 billion, public sector debt at €363.877 billion and household debt at €151.706 billion.

According to data published today by the BoP, public sector indebtedness rose by €7.453 billion compared to May 2022, while compared to the previous month the increase was €1.111 billion.

In the case of the private sector, the growth in annual borrowing was €1.361 billion, while compared with April this indicator rose by €511 million.

Household debt rose by €1.785 billion in the 12 months ending in May this year, but “did not change significantly from the previous month” (up €6.6 million from April).

In terms of annual change, compared with May 2022, the indebtedness of private enterprises grew by 0.25% in that period, 0.07 percentage points less than in April.

Total household indebtedness grew by 1.38% year-on-year, compared to 1.73% in April.

The BdP updates its statistics on financial sector indebtedness on August 23.
