Tile Museum shows “Reflections of the East” with dialog between current and past pieces

An exhibition that brings together, in dialogue, pieces from the Francisco Freire and Jin Ying Collection and ceramics by designer Rita Filipe will be inaugurated on Thursday at the National Tile Museum in Lisbon.

The exhibition “Reflexos do Oriente. Tea – Ceramics of the past and present” will feature Song dynasty pieces from that collection, in dialog with ceramic objects by designer Rita Filipe, with the basis of the project being the teaching of the preparation and correct way of drinking tea, according to a statement from the museum about the new exhibition.

To prepare and drink tea correctly “it is necessary to appreciate and handle the objects that participate in its confection, being fundamental to know what is considered globally the main expression of ceramic art, the porcelain of the Song Dynasty (960-1279)”, indicates the text.

These objects, “created in a sociocultural context that sought to integrate the Beautiful into everyday life, a concept hitherto unprecedented in Chinese culture, led to these porcelains progressively occupying the space of more expensive materials associated with luxury and opulence, such as gold, silver or jade”, he describes.

In the pieces from the Francisco Freire and Jin Ying Collection, now on display, “this fusion of functionality with beauty, without superfluous adornments, simultaneously classic and contemporary, inspired by nature, is therefore timeless”.

The pieces also establish a dialog with objects by designer Rita Filipe, who seeks to recover forms and techniques of traditional production, relating the past and the present.

The exhibition “Reflections of the East. Tea – ceramics of the past and present” opens on Thursday at 18:00 and will be open from Friday until September 15.
