Carminho’s “Portuguesa” album released in the US ahead of tour

The latest by fado singer Carminho, “Portuguesa”, will be released in the United States in August, with the performer starting a tour of North America in October, her promoter announced today.

The album “Portuguesa”, which includes among other themes “O Quarto” (Carminho / Fado Pagem, by Alfredo Marceneiro), will be released on August 18, in the United States, by the Nonesuch label, and the fado singer starts on October 6, in Boston, in the United States, a tour of nine North American and Canadian stages.

The album was released in Portugal last March, having been recorded over the last two years, but in particular in the spring of 2022, and features several guest authors, such as Rita Vian, who composed “Simplesmente ser”, Luísa Sobral, in “Sentas-te ao meu lado”, Joana Espadinha, in “Ficar”, and Brazilian musician Marcelo Camelo, who wrote “Levo o meu barco no mar”.

Carminho’s sixth album also includes “Meu amor marinheiro”, by António Campos and Joaquim Pimentel, a creation of the fado singer Saudade dos Santos (1938-2015), and “Alcântara Vem Cantar” (José da Silva Nunes and Jorge d’Ávila), a march from Alcântara in 1969, recorded by Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999).

After Boston, where Carminho performs at the Berklee Performance Center, the artist performs on October 8 at South Orange Performing Arts, in New Jersey and, the next day, takes the stage at City Winery, in Chicago.

On the 12th, the interpreter of “Saia Rodada” (Diogo Clemente / Valter Rolo) sings at the Bing Concert Hall in Stanford, and the next day at the San Francisco Jazz Center in San Francisco, and closes the performances on the stages of the United States in Los Angeles, with a show at Luckman Fine Arts, on the 14th.

Carminho crosses the border and on October 15 performs at the Centennial Theatre in Vancouver, Canada, where she is also scheduled to perform at the Théâtre Outrmont in Montreal on October 18 and at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto on October 21.

On this tour Carminho is accompanied by musicians André Dias, on Portuguese guitar, Flávio César Cardoso, on viola, Pedro Geraldes, on guitar, Tiago Maia, on bass, and João Pimenta Gomes, on mellotrón (electromechanical keyboard, which uses pre-recorded sounds on magnetic tapes adjusted to each note).

The CD “Portuguesa” came out five years after “Maria”, on which the fado singer also signed some songs.

Carminho was born amidst the guitars and voices of fado. Daughter of fado singer Teresa Siqueira, she made her public singing debut at the age of twelve, at the Coliseu dos Recreios, in Lisbon, having sung at the fado house her parents ran, “O Embuçado”, in Lisbon.

She released her first album in 2009, “Fado”, followed by “Alma” (2012), “Canto” (2014), “Carminho canta Tom Jobim” (2016) and “Maria” (2018).

Throughout her career, the fado singer has recorded and sung with artists from other musical areas, namely with the Brazilians Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and Marisa Monte, the Spanish Pablo Alborán and the Portuguese HMB and Bárbara Bandeira.
