New consumer loans in June totaled 633.29 million euros, down 3.8% year-on-year and 6.9% on the previous month, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) announced today.

According to provisional data released today by the central bank on the evolution of new consumer credit in June, new personal loans fell by 6.7% year-on-year to 280 million euros, car loans by 7.0% to 247 million euros and cards and overdrafts by 7.2% to 107 million euros.

The number of new loans fell 0.6% year-on-year and 6.2% quarter-on-quarter, to 126,666.

In June, 70,234 loans were taken out in the cards and overdraft category (down 5.1%), 40,048 personal loans (down 7.9%) and 16,384 car loans (down 6.7%).

Of the new total of new credit agreements in June, 5.6% were subsidized agreements, compared to 4.8% year-on-year and 5.7% in May.

“Subsidized credit agreements are concluded between the credit institution and the consumer, but part of the cost of the credit is borne by a third party (for example, the point of sale where the consumer buys the financed good),” explains the BdP.

As a proportion of the total amount, these subsidized loans accounted for 7.5% in June, compared to 6.2% in June 2022 and 7.6% in May.
