Collision between two streetcars causes 13 injuries in Lisbon

A collision between two passenger streetcars on Avenida 24 de Julho, in Lisbon, today caused 13 injuries, including three children, a source from the municipal Civil Protection told Lusa.

The accident was alerted at 17:15 due to a collision between two streetcars on Avenida 24 de Julho, in the Cais do Sodré area.

A source from the Lisbon City Council’s Municipal Civil Protection Service told Lusa that the accident caused 13 minor injuries, 10 adults and three children.

Eight of the injured were taken to hospital with trauma to the nose, lower back and upper limbs.

A source from the Lisbon Fire Brigade told Lusa that among the eight victims were two French citizens, two Czechs, an American, a Spaniard, an Italian and a Portuguese, who were transported to S. José, Santa Maria and São Francisco Xavier Hospitals.

The municipal Civil Protection also said that streetcar traffic in the area was interrupted because one of the vehicles was immobilized due to a mechanical issue.

Buses are running normally, he said.

At 19:10, 37 operatives were on the scene, supported by 12 vehicles, according to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).
