According to the Teatro de Vila Real, before the program returns to the interior of the house of culture, the Basque company Ertza (Spain) will present two short outdoor pieces on Friday, September 8, one of which was created as part of an artistic exchange and creation program between Mozambique and Spain.
This will be followed, in the auditorium, by the public presentations of the four emerging choreographic creations developed over almost a year as part of the Choreographic Creation Laboratory and featuring Luís Reboredo, Maria João Pereira, Patrícia Teles and Tiago Silva.
The theater’s director, Rui Araújo, has already said that this laboratory “is part of a strategy so that dance, particularly contemporary dance, can also have roots here in the region, so that one day there will be a company in this area”.
According to the organization, the festival’s programme “is marked by the return of the National Ballet Company, with two striking pieces”, namely “Simphony of Sorrows”, by Miguel Ramalho, and “Cantata”, by Mauro Bigonzetti.
Instável — Centro Coreográfico presents “Lowlands”, by Helder Seabra, on a night that will end with a DJ session and party in the café-concert.
Another Spanish company, Haatik Dantza, is taking part in the festival with the piece “Ur Bizitan” (“Living Water”), which will feature live music.
Choreographer Olga Roriz is invited to another edition of the “Backstage Conversation” initiative with the public, moderated by Carla Carvalho.
This year’s edition once again features a show with disabled performers and, according to the theater, “Beautiful People” is a piece by Rui Horta that is “both disturbing and sensitive”, created for the company Dançando com a Diferença.
Before the festival closes with the National Ballet Company, there will also be a screening of the documentary “Um Corpo Que Dança”, by Marco Martins, about the Gulbenkian Ballet and the development of dance in Portugal.
