Car market grew 33.8% in August to 161,807 new vehicles

Between January and August this year, 161,807 new vehicles were put into circulation in Portugal, an increase of 33.8% over the same period last year, ACAP – the Portuguese Automobile Association – said in a statement.

“In the period from January to August 2023, 161,807 new vehicles were put into circulation in Portugal, which represented a decrease of 14.6% compared to the first eight months of 2019, although the comparison with the same period in 2022 shows an increase of 33.8%,” he pointed out.

In August of this year, “15,702 cars were registered in Portugal, 2.6% less than in the same month of 2019, which was the last pre-pandemic year, but 17.7% more than in the same month of 2022,” reads the same note.

With regard to passenger cars, according to the association, in August “13,050 new passenger cars were registered in Portugal, 4.4% more than in the same month in 2019”, and compared to August 2022 “the market grew by 14.1%”.

In the first eight months of the year, “passenger car registrations totaled 139,279 units, which translated into a negative variation of 13.1% compared to the same period in 2019,” said ACAP.

Compared to the same period last year, this segment saw an increase of 36.8%.

According to the association, between January and August, 48.4% of new passenger cars registered were powered by alternative energies and, “in particular, 16.4% of new passenger cars were electric,” it said.

ACAP also reported data on the light goods vehicle market, which saw a 42.0% drop in August compared to the same month in 2019, “standing at 1,912 registered units”. On the other hand, “when compared to the same month in 2022, there was growth of 31.4%”, said the association.

In accumulated terms, this market registered 17,788 units, a decrease of 30.2% compared to the same period in 2019 and an increase of 17.7% compared to the first eight months of 2022.

Finally, in the heavy vehicle market, which includes passenger and goods vehicles, there was a 64.8% increase in August 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, with 740 vehicles in this category sold.

In the first eight months of 2023, “heavy-duty registrations totaled 4,740 units, which represented market growth of 20.4% compared to the same period in 2022,” he concluded.
