The Algarve’s hotel industry recorded an average occupancy rate per room of 89.9% in August, a drop of 2.3 percentage points (p.p) compared to the same period in 2022, the Algarve’s largest hotel association announced today.
According to provisional data provided by the Algarve Hotels and Tourist Resorts Association (AHETA) in its summary of the monthly evolution of activity in the sector, the record is 3% below the average occupancy value for 2019 (the year before the pandemic).
According to the business association, the markets that contributed most to the drop were the Netherlands, Spain, France and Germany.
The Irish, US, Canadian and Danish markets showed the biggest increases compared to the same period last year.
According to AHETA, the national market was practically at the same level as in 2019, with only a 0.1% drop.
In August, the longest average stays were in the Netherlands market, with 6.5 nights, followed by the UK market, with 6.1 nights.
The average stay in the Algarve’s accommodation units was 5.1 nights, down 1.7% on 2019.
By geographical area, the biggest increases compared to 2019 occurred in the areas of Lagos/Sagres (+3.4 p.p.), Lagoa/Silves (+1.2 p.p.) and Portimão/Monchique (+0.3 p.p).
The main falls were in Monte Gordo/Vila Real de Santo António (-3.8 p.p.), Albufeira (-3.9 p.p.) and Loulé (-3.3 p.p.).
