The “Correntes de um só rio” festival, dedicated to the song and fado of Coimbra, will be held from October 4 to 8, and will include a show with Cuca Roseta and a concert in tribute to Humberto Matias.
The sixth edition of the festival is dedicated to the theme “Resistance(s), Freedom(s) and the Future(s)” and features several shows at the Convento São Francisco (CSF), namely on the evening of the 4th, with the show “Aqui já se cantou de galo!”, featuring Cuca Roseta and performances by Bruno Costa, António Ataíde, Catarina Moura, Francisco Costa, Nuno Botelho and Ni Ferreirinha, says the Coimbra City Council in a press release sent to the Lusa news agency today.
On that day, the public will be “challenged to reflect on the more conservative and liberal perspectives of Coimbra’s fado/song”.
The following day, the Memorie Popolari Trio and the in.dia duo will present “Expresso: Coimbra|Naples”, a show that aims to “be a meeting of cultures that reflects the differences and similarities between Coimbra song and Neapolitan song, both cultural heritage of their respective regions”.
The concert “Memórias de uma Guitarra” (Memories of a Guitar), a tribute to Humberto Matias, will feature him and the Coimbra Quartet on October 6.
“Humberto Matias is a central figure in the history of Canção de Coimbra, having accompanied on guitar many of the great names of this unique musical expression in the world,” the municipality said in the same statement.
On the 7th, the project As Vozes do Xisto will bring together a group of artists focused on non-urban music as a tool for empowering communities and valuing their active role in combating cultural homogenization.
The Pinhal Cultural Association’s project is being carried out in partnership with the Coimbra Music Museum Cultural Association.
On the same date, Inês Santos and João Farinha give voice to the Rosa Negra project, which aims to “affirm different sounds for a fado that is from Coimbra, renewing and modernizing it”.
On the last day of the festival, BAIXaVOZ (Choir of Baixa de Coimbra) will perform for the first time with a show entitled “Voices of risky days”.
According to the city council, the Coro da Baixa de Coimbra is the result of a community project created with the students of the São Bartolomeu elementary school, who held two poetry/haikus workshops, the results of which will be included in the show.
“Its repertoire evokes the multifaceted musical memory of downtown Coimbra and the choir will have the special participation of the Toeira Trupe group.”
Tickets for the shows cost between three and eight euros, with the CSF Friends Card guaranteeing a 40% discount.
