The weather in mainland Portugal will be affected until Friday by depression Juan, which is already hitting the central and southern regions, causing “sometimes heavy rainfall”, the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) said today.

In a statement, the IPMA explains that the depression, which is moving “gradually eastwards”, is associated with “an unstable tropical air mass with a high water vapor content, which is already affecting the central and southern regions of mainland Portugal, with sometimes heavy rainfall”.

In addition to the precipitation, forecasts indicate that there is a possibility of “thunderstorms and convective gusts” until late Friday morning.

The IPMA also predicts snowfall in the highest points of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, starting early Friday morning, “which should accumulate above 1400/1600 meters, gradually falling to 1200/1400 meters”.

In addition, the wind is expected to intensify “on the coast south of Cape Mondego and in the highlands, especially in the center and south, with gusts of up to 70 km/h,” the note reads.

To this end, the IPMA adds, yellow warnings have been issued for precipitation and snow.

The districts of Lisbon, Évora, Castelo Branco, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Leiria, Beja and Portalegre are already under a yellow warning for precipitation. This yellow warning will be in force until 09:00 on Friday.

The districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco will be under a yellow snow warning between 03:00 and 12:00 on Friday.

The yellow warning is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.

The weather in the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores will not be affected by depression Juan.
