The patient who was injured in a fire at Santa Maria Hospital on Wednesday died in the early hours of this morning, the hospital said.
In a statement released today, the board of directors of the Santa Maria Local Health Unit (ULS) expressed its deep sorrow at the patient’s death and reiterated its “close support and accompaniment” for the family.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning in a four-person room in the Internal Medicine ward and ended up injuring a 91-year-old man who was admitted there and was immediately transferred to the burns unit.
The ULS of Santa Maria guarantees its collaboration with the competent authorities and that a “rigorous internal investigation” will be carried out to determine the causes of the fire.
The fire was extinguished by the professionals on duty.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the board of directors of the ULS Santa Maria stressed the “high level of professionalism” of the service teams in the inpatient ward and in the other support units, adding that their quick reaction prevented this outbreak of fire “from taking on even more serious dimensions”.
The causes of the incident are being investigated by the authorities and, at the same time, an internal investigation is underway.
The incident was not caused by structural problems in the building.
The Santa Maria ULS will cover the costs of the patient’s funeral.
