More than 8,000 offenses, 521 of them for drunk driving, were recorded by the security forces in seven days, as part of the “Zero Taxes at the Wheel” campaign, which ended on Wednesday.
In a joint statement, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) indicate that over the course of a week 50,623 vehicles were inspected in person, with a total of 8,269 offenses recorded.
During the operation, which ran from February 1 to 7, 2,245 accidents were recorded, causing eight fatalities, 36 serious injuries and 735 minor injuries.
Compared to the same period in 2023, there were 400 fewer accidents, one fewer fatality, 12 fewer serious injuries and 21 fewer minor injuries, they say.
The accidents with fatalities, all male and aged between 22 and 83, occurred in the districts of Lisbon, Aveiro, Beja, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria and Setúbal.
The “Zero Tax at the Wheel” campaign included the participation of the regional administration services of the Azores and Madeira in awareness-raising activities.
This was the second of 12 awareness and enforcement campaigns planned under the 2024 National Enforcement Plan (PNF).
By the end of the year, 10 more campaigns will be carried out, one per month, with awareness-raising and enforcement actions.
Of the two campaigns that took place this year, seven actions were carried out, during which more than 850 people were sensitized in person.
As for enforcement actions, the number of drivers inspected in person was approximately 100,100 and around 5.1 million vehicles were inspected using radars.
