Demonstrators in Lisbon call for an “end to genocide” in Gaza and boycotts of the Jewish state

Calls for an “end to the genocide” in Gaza and demands for boycotts of Israel brought together demonstrators from various backgrounds, including Palestinians and Jews, in a protest that brought together three to four thousand people, according to the organizers.

Wielding placards and Palestinian flags, the demonstrators started walking down Avenida Almirante Reis, towards Martim Moniz, at around 4pm, in an initiative that was attended by members of the Left Bloc, PCP and PAN and was called for by more than 30 movements.

“What do we want from parliament? Boycotts, sanctions and divestment”, “Gaza, listen, we shout your struggle” were some of the slogans chanted by the demonstrators, many also in English, reflecting the diversity of nationalities at this demonstration.

Questioned by Lusa, the police, who accompanied the protest, declined to give any figures on the turnout. According to the organization, there were “between three and four thousand” people. The protest is also taking place in Porto, Braga and Angra do Heroísmo.
