Portugal has seen the biggest increase in age in the EU over the last decade

The median age of the population of European Union (EU) countries reached 44.5 in January 2023, an increase of 2.3 years in the last decade, with Portugal registering the largest increase, Eurostat announced today.

According to the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), the median age of the European population rose from 42.2 years in 2013 to 44.5 years ten years later, on January 1st of last year.

In Portugal, the median age increased by 4.4 years between 2013 and 2023, making it the country where the median age increased the most in number of years.

Greece, Spain, Slovakia and Italy also saw an increase in the median age of the population by four years.

Only Sweden (-0.1 years) and Malta (-0.4 years) lowered their median age by ten years.
