Chega abstains in the vote on the Azores Government Program and supports its approval

Chega will abstain today from voting on the Azores Government Program in the archipelago’s parliament, announced the party’s regional leader, who will thus make it possible for the document to be approved.

José Pacheco was speaking to journalists before the start of the parliamentary session in which the vote will take place, in Horta, on the island of Faial.

After the regional legislative elections on February 4, the PS, with 23 elected deputies, and the BE, with one, announced their vote against the Program of the XIV Regional Government (PSD/CDS/PPM).

If the five Chega MPs also voted against, there would be an absolute majority (29 seats), enough to reject the document, which would mean the resignation of the executive led by Social Democrat José Manuel Bolieiro.

Initially, Chega, the third most voted political force in the Azores, made its vote dependent on the party joining the executive, a demand that did not materialize. In the meantime, it began to accept an agreement with the PSD, the largest party in the coalition.

The Legislative Assembly, where the PSD/CDS/PPM coalition has 26 seats, is also made up of one deputy from IL and one from PAN.
