More than two thousand accidents, causing eight deaths, three more than in the same period in 2023, were recorded by the security forces in the last six days as part of the “2 Wheels: Hold on for dear life” campaign.

In a joint statement, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) indicate that 2,034 accidents were recorded between Tuesday and Sunday, resulting in eight deaths, 35 serious injuries and 573 minor injuries

Compared to the same period in 2023, there were 67 fewer accidents, three more fatalities, seven fewer serious injuries and three more minor injuries.

The eight fatal victims, all male, were aged between 23 and 67 and the accidents occurred in the districts of Braga, Porto, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon and Beja.

During the period of this campaign, between Friday and Sunday, the Moto GP Portugal event was held at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, and the GNR predicted a significant increase in the volume of motorcycle traffic on the main access roads to the Algarve.

The aim of the campaign was to alert drivers, particularly those on two wheels, to driving safely, complying with the rules of the Highway Code and avoiding risky behavior, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and incorrect use of safety devices.

The Azores and Madeira regional administrations took part in the campaign to raise awareness.

During the security forces’ operations, 3.4 million vehicles were checked for speed by radar, 3.3 million of them by SINCRO – the National Speed Control System, under the responsibility of ANSR.

The security forces checked 52,100 vehicles.

Of the total of 3.4 million vehicles inspected during the campaign, 18,800 offenses were recorded.

This was the third of 12 awareness and enforcement campaigns planned as part of the 2024 National Enforcement Plan.

By the end of the year there will be nine more campaigns, one per month, with awareness-raising and enforcement actions.

Of the three campaigns that took place this year, 11 actions were carried out, during which more than 1,100 people were sensitized in person.

As for enforcement actions, the number of drivers inspected in person was 152,200, while around 8.5 million vehicles were inspected by radar.
