Estoril Open: João Sousa makes his debut on a day with many Portuguese players

João Sousa makes his debut today at the Estoril Open, in what will be the last tournament of the career of the best Portuguese tennis player ever, on a second day with several Portuguese representatives in action at the Estoril Tennis Club.

Sousa, currently ranked 272nd in the world, has received an invitation from the organization for his final Estoril Open, where he will face the young Frenchman Arthur Fils, 37th in the ranking, in what could be his last singles match.

Affected by various physical problems, the 35-year-old from Guimarães will retire as the only Portuguese to have won tournaments on the ATP circuit, one of which was the Estoril Open in 2018.

Another wild card winner, Portuguese Henrique Rocha, who entered the top 200 this week (197th), will be in the main draw of the Estoril Open for the second time, facing experienced Frenchman Gaël Monfils, 45th, in the last match of the day on the center court.

Coming from qualifying, Jaime Faria, ranked 262nd, will open the main court in his ATP debut against Spaniard David Jorda Sanchís, 329th, who was brought in at the last minute to replace Frenchman Constant Lestienne, 90th, who has a left knee injury.

After qualifying for the second round of singles the day before, Nuno Borges joins Francisco Cabral in the doubles tournament, which they won in 2022, facing Frenchmen Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul on the Cascais court.

On a day with eight singles matches and a forecast of rain, 17-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca, ranked 288th and who received an invitation from the organization, will face British qualifier Jan Choinski, ranked 188th, on the main court.
