The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) has issued yellow warnings until Sunday for the nine islands of the Azores, due to forecasts of sometimes heavy rainfall, wind and sea turbulence.
According to the IPMA, for the islands of the Western group (Flores and Corvo), the warning of “sometimes heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms” will be in force between 17:00 local time on Saturday (18:00 in Lisbon) and 23:00 (00:00 on Sunday in Lisbon).
In the Eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the same level, also for “sometimes heavy precipitation, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms” was valid between 08:43 today (09:43 in Lisbon) and 11:00 (12:00 in Lisbon) and, due to the wind (southwest direction, turning west), between 08:43 and 14:00 (15:00 in Lisbon).
The two islands are still under a yellow warning for sea turbulence (westerly waves) until 17:00 today (18:00 in Lisbon).
The IPMA’s yellow warning due to the forecast of sometimes heavy rain, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, was also in force for the islands of the central group of the Azores (Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa) until 11:00 a.m. today (12:00 p.m. in Lisbon) and will be in force again between 8:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. in Lisbon) on Saturday and 2:00 a.m. local time (3:00 a.m. in Lisbon) on Sunday.
The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
