A 49-year-old man was seriously injured today following an explosion caused by a fire in a prefabricated house in Barão de São João, in the municipality of Lagos, a Civil Protection source told Lusa.
According to a source from the Algarve Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, due to the seriousness of the injuries, the man had to be airlifted to one of Lisbon’s central hospitals.
According to the same source, the fire broke out at 09:00 in that town in the Faro district, and the explosion was possibly caused by a gas bottle.
However, the causes of the fire “are still unknown”, said the source.
Fourteen Civil Protection personnel were involved in the rescue operations, with the support of four vehicles and a helicopter from the National Institute for Medical Emergencies (INEM).
