In 2023, the PSP’s Coimbra Command carried out more than 4,000 policing actions and preventive and surveillance police operations, and more than 700 people were arrested, the district commander said today.
Speaking at the official ceremony commemorating the 146th anniversary of the institution, which marked the establishment of a police service in the city of Coimbra in 1878, Superintendent Sérgio Loureiro presented various data on the work carried out by the PSP in the district in 2023 “as a way of publicly exposing, albeit very briefly, the service” provided to communities.

Speakingattheofficialceremonycommemoratingthe146th anniversary of the institution, which marked the establishment of a police service in the city of Coimbra in 1878, Superintendent Sérgio Loureiro presented various data on the work carried out by the PSP in the district in 2023 “as a way of publicly exposing, albeit very briefly, the service” provided to communities.
Thus, in addition to the more than 2,000 preventive policing and visibility-enhancing actions, “carried out on a daily basis and using all police skills”, around 2,100 preventive or surveillance police operations were also carried out, “many of them in conjunction with other entities”, he said.
511 policing operations were planned and carried out at events in Coimbra and Figueira da Foz (the two cities in the district where the PSP is present) “of a sporting, cultural or social nature, many of them with high attendance and considerable risk”, stressed Sérgio Loureiro.
Over the course of 2023, 711 people were arrested on suspicion of committing different criminal offenses, especially drug trafficking, theft and crimes related to driving a car (without a legal license or under the influence of alcohol).
“In smaller numbers, but with an impact due to the circumstances in which they occurred, we would highlight five arrests in the context of domestic violence,” noted the district commander.
Still on the crime front, the Coimbra PSP saw an increase “of around 3% in the total” of recorded crime, with emphasis on the 27% increase “in relation to separate legislation”, influenced by drug trafficking and road crimes, and 7% in crimes against property “as a result of the police work carried out in these areas”.
Conversely, according to the same source, there was a 2% reduction in crimes against people.
As far as criminal investigations are concerned, around 3,700 investigations were concluded, resulting in 997 citizens being made defendants, 65 of whom ended up in custody, seven of whom remained in pre-trial detention.
Officers from the Coimbra PSP command and the Figueira da Foz police department also carried out 2,300 individual investigations “at the request of judicial authorities”, and 193 people were arrested on warrants.
In terms of the exclusive competence to control private security, 230 inspections were carried out and 186 infractions were detected. In terms of weapons and explosives, around 1,100 licensing procedures were initiated and 14 training courses were held for weapons holders. A total of 38 inspections were carried out, 345 administrative offenses were issued and six people were arrested.
In his speech to the national director of the PSP, Superintendent Sérgio Loureiro stressed that the results achieved “illustrate the dedication and commitment of the entire police force and the technical staff supporting the operational activity of the Coimbra District Command, in very different and wide-ranging areas”.
“Not only those professionals who act directly in the first line of prevention and response, but also those who, performing operational support functions, provide the necessary conditions for the mission to be carried out, under the possible circumstances. Activities such as operational planning and control, decision support, information, coordination and supervision, as well as administrative, logistical, financial, training and social support are essential to maintaining operational capacity,” he said.
