A few hundred people holding placards gathered in Lisbon’s Rossio square this afternoon to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and demand that Portugal recognize the State of Palestine.
“End the blockade of Gaza” and “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians” were two of the phrases that could be read on the posters at the event organized by the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), the CGTP, the Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and for Peace in the Middle East (MPPM) and the Ruído project.
The vice-president of the MPPM, Carlos Almeida, told Lusa that “this is yet another act of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, in the face of the continuation of the genocide, despite the decision of the International Court of Justice to impose an end to Israeli operations in Rafah”.
The leader pointed out that with the recognition of the Palestinian state by three European countries – Spain, Norway and Ireland – Portugal has become more isolated in its position of non-recognition of the Palestinian state.
