“Serralves in Light” returns with “Dreams and Illusions” and 13 interactive exhibitions

The third edition of “Serralves in Light” returns this Thursday with the theme “Dreams and Illusions” and the night exhibition will feature 13 interactive installations along a three-kilometer route in Serralves Park.

In a telephone interview with the Lusa news agency ahead of the opening of the “Serralves in Light” event, Ricardo Bravo, who manages the Serralves Park, said that this third edition “will surpass” the previous two, because it will have 13 interactive installations and “two commemorative ones”, one for the 35th anniversary of the Serralves Foundation, and the other for the 50th anniversary of the April 25 Revolution.

“This is the third edition of ‘Serralves in Light’. We continue to collaborate with the creative director, Nuno Maya, and his team to make it happen (…). This year’s theme is ‘Dreams and Illusions’, a more imaginative, more introspective theme that draws heavily on color.”

Ricardo Bravo added that the route of the exhibition will be around three kilometers long, which means that it will take around “an hour and a half to walk the route”.

There is the “novelty this year of 13 interactive installations”, which means that “as people pass by, or as they move, they can interact directly with the light and sound installation”, explains Ricardo Bravo.

This year there are also “two commemorative installations”. One about the 35th anniversary of the Serralves Foundation and the other about the 50th anniversary of April 25th, which is the result of a collaboration between creative director Nuno Maya, the Foundation’s Educational Service and the Condominhas School, in the vicinity of Serralves.

“We’re always concerned about having an educational facility that connects with the community and that people feel part of,” explained the head of Serralves Park.

This nighttime route will include, for example, the light and sound installation “Chirp & Drift”, by artist Kathy Hinde, which consists of a set of illuminated instruments that vibrate with messages in Morse Code, giving rise to soft sounds and harmonies made by accordion reeds that resemble a bird.

The projection of 50 April carnations, the result of the “Liberdade” creative process developed by the event’s creative director and the Serralves Ambiente Education Service, with 50 elementary school pupils from the Condominhas Primary School is another installation included in “Serralves in Light”.

Overall, this year’s installation “surpasses the previous ones” and will allow people to see the park at night and in a “completely different way” over the next four months, assured Ricardo Bravo.

In parallel with this large open-air night exhibition, there will be a program of guided tours to complement and enhance the experience of the different dimensions present: light, nature, art and architecture.

“Serralves in Light” is “based on pillars such as sustainability, innovation, creativity, the environment and freedom”, and was recognized by The Times newspaper as “one of the ten best exhibitions to visit in all of Europe”, reads the show’s press pack.
