Peripheries Festival brings 15 films to Marvão and Valencia de Alcántara

A total of 15 films will be screened at the 12th edition of Periferias – International Film Festival of Marvão and Valencia de Alcántara (Spain), which takes place from August 9 to 17, the organization announced today.

The program features fiction, documentary and animation films from Brazil, Finland, Italy, Palestine, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Tunisia.

Organized annually by the Periferias Cultural Association (Portugal) and Gato Pardo (Spain), the festival has the support of the municipalities of Marvão, in the district of Portalegre, and Valencia de Alcántara and other entities from both countries.

“Periferias reinforces its status as a reference in the production of auteur films focused on the defense and promotion of human rights, environmental preservation and the promotion of cultural art,” said the promoters.

According to the program, the opening session of the event is scheduled for August 9, at 9:30 p.m., at Marvão Castle, with a screening of the film “Manga d’Terra”, by Basil da Cunha, and the director will be present.

Also on the first day, but at 23:45, Cape Verdean singer Eliana Rosa, the protagonist of the film “Manga d’Terra”, will give a concert, also at Marvão Castle.

The festival also features the films “Quando a Terra Foge”, by Frederico Lobo, “Folhas Caídas”, by Aki Kaurismäki, “Siempre Nos Quedará Mañana”, by Paola Cortellesi, “El espíritu de la colmena”, by Víctor Erice, “Cerrar los Ojos”, by Víctor Erice, and “Bye Bye Tibériade”, by Lina Soualem.

“Retrato Fantasma” by Kleber Mendonça Filho, “Robot Dreams Amigos Improváveis” by Pablo Berger, “A Minha Casinha” by António Sequeira, “Lindo” by Margarida Gramaxo, “La Estrella Azul” by Javier Macipe, “Quatro Filhas” by Kaouther Ben Hania, “Elis&Tom, Só tinha de ser com você” by Roberto de Oliveira and “Anselm” by Wim Wenders are the other films to be shown.

As well as Marvão, the activities are taking place in Santo António das Areias, Beirã, Portagem, Galegos and the Roman city of Ammaia, in this municipality, in Castelo de Vide and in the Spanish towns of Valencia de Alcántara, La Fontañera, Santiago de Alcântara and Malpartida de Cáceres.

The closing ceremony, which includes the awarding of the “Tejo/Tajo International Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Prize” to the winning film of the 12th edition of the Periferias Festival, is the initiative planned for Malpartida de Cáceres.

The program also includes concerts with the Trio de Roseta and the Blue Bossa Duo, a cinema session for children, the workshop “A Drawn Story. Cinema is Us”, the exhibition “Terra (da) Mãe” by Jaime Rodrigues, guided tours and a walk.
