2024 Avignon Festival attracted more than 110,000 spectators

More than 110,000 people attended the Avignon Theater Festival, which ends today in France, according to an assessment by the artistic director, Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues.

“I am very grateful to the more than 700 Festival staff, to the more than 600 artists and technicians invited to the Festival stages and to the more than 110,000 people who have made the Festival, the audience, the deep meaning of our existence,” wrote Tiago Rodrigues on social media.

The 78th edition of the Festival d’Avignon, this year dedicated to the Spanish language, closes tonight with a concert by Catalan singer Silvia Pérez Cruz, and among the last shows on Sunday’s program is “Terminal (O Estado do Mundo)”, by Inês Barahona and Miguel Fragata.

“I will never forget this edition of the Festival d’Avignon, which has confirmed more than ever the immense strength and hope that can arise when we come together because of our love for the living arts and democracy,” said the artistic director.

Last Monday, Tiago Rodrigues revealed that the 2025 edition of the Festival d’Avignon will have the Arabic language as a guest; and Cape Verdean choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas will be the ‘accomplice artist'”.

Another name announced for 2025 was that of Swiss director Milo Rau, who will be bringing a touring show to Avignon.

The tribute to the Arabic language will be made in partnership with the Arab World Institute.
