The number of visits to museums, tourist attractions and stores in Aveiro continues to rise, having broken a new record in the first half of 2024, the year in which Aveiro is the Portuguese Capital of Culture, the municipality said today.
According to a press release, in the first six months of the year the municipality saw a 19% increase in the number of visitors to museums (19,000 more visitors) and a 41% increase in the number of visitors to tourist sites (14,000 more visitors), compared to the same period in 2023, which had already been a record-breaking year in tourist terms.
In the first half of this year, according to local authority figures, the municipality recorded 100,415 visitors to the Aveiro Museums (Santa Joana, Cidade, Arte Nova and Troncalhada), the Old Captaincy Gallery, the Carmelitas Church and the Morgados da Pedricosa Gallery. The tourist areas, namely the Loja Turismo & Museums and Station, received 34,156 visitors.
Compared to 2023, the Aveiro Museums had only received 81,419 visitors and the tourist attractions 20,143 – figures that were already higher than in 2022, the same statement said.
“It’s a remarkable growth that we’re achieving every month,” said the mayor of Aveiro, Ribau Esteves, quoted in the same press release, considering that this result is the fruit of the work led by the municipality in conjunction with various public entities, business associations and private companies in the hotel sector, local accommodation, tour operators and maritime tourism, among others.
The mayor also said that the municipality intends to continue this success in the second half of 2024, adding that in addition to the Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture programme, very important events are expected for the tourism sector, organized by important national entities, such as the AHRESP Congress / Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Similar Services of Portugal (October 11 and 12).
