"Defamation". Carlos Pinto denies threats to ex-wife and proceeds with complaint

Carlos Pinto was released after serving eight of the eleven years he was sentenced for attempting to kill his wife, Eliza, in a hotel in Spain. The case made headlines again this week after the victim reported that she is once again being threatened by her now ex-husband. However, the Portuguese man denies all accusations and revealed that he will file a “complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office for defamation and persecution.”

The case was reported by Eliza, a Romanian national, who stated that she started receiving threats from her ex-husband through social media after he was released on parole from a prison in Vigo. In addition to her, her close friends allegedly received ‘friend requests’ on Facebook from Carlos Pinto.

In a statement, the man claims the information is “false” and that he “never” approached “Eliza’s friends or social networks,” and he further asserts that she “is not the victim.”

Eliza also previously stated that her ex-husband sent her several letters. “In the first letters he sent, he offered money for me to drop the case. I think at the time, the letters mentioned 150 thousand euros. Then the threatening letters began,” the woman said.

Carlos Pinto was released on parole after serving 8 of the 11 years he was sentenced for attempted murder of his now ex-wife. Despite being prohibited from contacting her, the businessman from Vila Nova de Gaia tried to add her on Instagram and sent several ‘friend requests’ on Facebook and messages to the victim’s friends.

Carlos Pinto now claims that “it’s a lie that he sent any letter with or without threats to Eliza from prison,” adding that he sent letters to his wife’s friends before the trial, but to “ask for help with the case.”

“It was considered that I broke the restraining order by trying to contact friends with whom Eliza was. Spanish prisons are very strict on these matters and wouldn’t even let any letter addressed to her pass. And there is a detailed record of any letter we send. I didn’t send a single letter to any alleged friend of hers/mine after being convicted,” he assured.

The man also explained that he was released on parole after psychologists considered him an “emotionally stable person, with low risk of criminality” and due to his “health condition,” as he is “extremely ill” suffering from severe hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and urgently needs “surgical intervention.”

Thus, reiterating that he “never intended nor intends” to contact Eliza, he stated that he will “file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office for defamation and persecution and for similar pains,” against the media and his ex-wife.

The case dates back to April 2016, when Carlos tried to kill Eliza, allegedly for financial reasons (and jealousy), in a hotel in Vigo, Spain, where they were staying overnight.

The millionaire, who in February 2016 had already been sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud by the Viseu Court, was reportedly in financial difficulties and wanted his wife’s life insurance. They had been in a relationship for six years and married for six months.

At the time, the former engineer tried to claim self-defense, but the court concluded that he attacked Eliza by surprise as she was leaving the shower, hitting her on the side of the head with a cobblestone handle, causing temporary loss of vision. Subsequently, he tried to asphyxiate her with both hands and repeatedly hit her head on the floor.

The Romanian woman only managed to escape because Carlos Pinto allegedly suffered a heart attack while attacking her.

Carlos Pinto was reportedly transferred from a prison in Pontevedra to Salamanca, where he was eventually granted the right to parole on July 7 of this year, after serving only eight of the 11 years and four months in prison to which he had been sentenced.
