Secular Onion Fair in Portalegre will have 130 exhibitors

A total of 130 exhibitors are taking part in the secular Onion Fair in Portalegre, between September 12 and 15, whose program includes shows with Tony Carreira, Miguel Azevedo and Mishlawi, the city council announced today.

The event, promoted by the Municipality of Portalegre, will take place in the Fair and Exhibition Park of the Portalegre Region Business Centre (NERPOR) and in the space of the Portalegre District Farmers’ Association (AADP), which are supporting the organization.

According to the mayor of Portalegre, Fermelinda Carvalho, this year’s event will feature “130 exhibitors”, including a livestock show with “101 sheep and 140 cattle”.

The fair involves a budget of approximately 120,000 euros, said the mayor, specifying that “around 100,000 euros” will be used to support external hiring costs and “around 20,000 euros will be internal costs”.

“I understand that, as it’s a free event, there should be some restraint in what the municipality spends,” but “that’s not why it will be a smaller, less successful event,” she argued.

Fermelinda Carvalho also stressed that the Onion Fair aims to “breathe life” into the local economy and “stimulate investment”, as well as showcasing the cultural projects developed in the municipality.

“It’s important to give a stage to the region’s cultural groups,” he stressed.

Between September 12 and 15, the municipality will also provide buses from the urban network to the venue.

In addition to shows by Tony Carreira, Miguel Azevedo and Mishlawi, there will be performances by cultural groups from the region, DJs, a Portuguese bullfight, an equestrian gala at the Portalegre Equestrian Center, demonstrations of Alentejo cuisine, among other activities.
