A recreational vessel that was adrift in the Faro-Olhão bar, “due to the strong current,” had to be towed by the crew of the Olhão Lifesaving Station on Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement released on Thursday, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) explained that the alert was given at around 6:55 PM “through a member of the public,” and “the crew of the Olhão Lifesaving Station and elements of the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Faro were immediately activated.”
Upon arrival at the scene, “it was found that the vessel, which was allegedly anchored in the anchorage of Deserta Island, had already left the bar without hitting the breakwaters” and was “about 0.5 miles south of the bar (approximately 800 meters).”
However, there were no crew members on board.
The vessel was towed, “for navigation safety reasons, to a sheltered area of the eastern breakwater of the bar,” and the owner, “who was already looking for” the vehicle, was notified to appear at the Olhão Port Captaincy to regularize the situation.
