Are there children? Civil Protection warns about precautions when airing the house

If you have children at home, this news is for you. This Sunday, the Lisbon Municipal Civil Protection Service issued a warning on Facebook about the precautions you should take when airing out your home, as “a small child has no concept of danger.”

“With warm weather, the tendency is to ventilate our homes. But if there are children at home, extra care must be taken with open windows. Opening windows and balcony doors to let fresh air in feels good, but a small child has no concept of danger,” the entity began.

In line with this, Civil Protection advised to “place low furniture away from open windows so that children cannot use them to climb and fall,” a measure that is also valid “even if you live on the ground floor.”

You may also consider “installing opening limiters on windows” so that they do not open more than nine centimeters (about 3.5 inches), as well as locks.

However, if you choose this last solution, “keep the keys out of sight and reach of the child, in a place known to adults where they can find them in case of emergency.”
