The Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital, in Lisbon, carried out 35 deliveries between Friday and Sunday and attended to around 300 patients, during a weekend in which many of the region’s obstetrics and gynecology emergency rooms were closed.
“Over the three days, a total of 296 patients were admitted and 35 deliveries were carried out, 10 of which were caesarean sections,” the São José ULS, which includes the Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital (MAC), told Lusa, without specifying whether these figures were above average.
According to the organization, nine mothers and their babies were transferred to hospitals in their area of residence.
The ULS de São José added that between 00:00 and 08:00 today, three deliveries were carried out, two of which were caesarean sections, and two mothers and their newborns were transferred to hospitals in their area of residence.
Access to hospital emergency rooms was very limited over the weekend, with 12 closed on Saturday and 17 on Sunday, according to the data available on the National Health Service (SNS) platform.
The effects were particularly visible on the south bank of the Tagus in relation to obstetrics and gynecology, with the closures of the emergency rooms at São Bernardo Hospital in Setúbal, Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada and Nossa Senhora do Rosário Hospital in Barreiro.
Also in this area, the pediatric emergency rooms at Barreiro hospital and Setúbal hospital were closed.
Also in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, users had to look for alternatives, due to the closure of the obstetrics emergency room at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, the pediatrics emergency room at Beatriz Ângelo Hospital in Loures, and the obstetrics and gynecology emergency room at Santarém Hospital.
In a statement released on Thursday, the SNS Executive Directorate warned the population of “constraints in the emergency services” over the weekend and asked users to “always call the SNS24/SNS Grávida line 808 24 24 24 before going to a hospital”.
According to the SNS, seven obstetrics/gynecology emergency rooms are closed today.
The obstetrics and gynecology emergency rooms at São Bernardo Hospital in Setúbal, Santarém Hospital, Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada, São Francisco Xavier Hospital in Lisbon, Nossa Senhora do Rosário Hospital in Barreiro and Dr. Manoel Constâncio Hospital in Abrantes are closed this Monday.
