Since the Investment Residence Permit (ARI) program was launched in 2012, 1,123 visas have been issued.
Brazilian investment captured through gold visas exceeded 870 million euros in August, and 2017 was the year in which Brazil invested the most, according to data requested by Lusa from the SEF.
Since the Residence Permit for Investment (ARI) program was launched in October 2012, i.e. almost 10 years ago, Brazilian investment totaled more than 870 million euros and 1,123 visas granted until August.
In 2013, the investment from Brazil captured through this instrument amounted to 14.9 million euros, in a total of 14 gold visas granted, the following year it was 41.5 million euros (52 visas granted) and in 2015 it exceeded 33.8 million euros (39 ARI).
In 2016, investment more than tripled to 117.7 million euros (142 ARI), and in 2017 the figure reached 178.8 million euros, the year in which Brazilian citizens invested the most, in a total of 226 visas granted.
After this peak, the investment decreased to €148.6 million the following year (total 180 visas granted), rising again to €158 million in 2019 (210 visas).
During the pandemic, Brazilian citizens continued to invest through ARI, but at a much slower pace: investment raised in 2020 was €83.9 million, out of a total of 126 gold visas granted, and in 2021 it totaled €49.5 million (70 visas granted).
Between January and August of this year, the captured investment totals 42.9 million Euros, 60% more than the 26.8 million Euros registered in the same period of 2021.
Last year, 42 gold visas were granted to Brazil in the first eight months of the year, and this year the number rises to 64 by the end of August.
Last month alone, Brazilian investment totaled 6.6 million euros and 10 ARI granted, more than double the investment in August 2021 (2.5 million euros and three visas granted).
Of the 10 visas granted last August, five (4.7 million euros) relate to the purchase of real estate worth half a million euros or more, three relate to the purchase of real estate for urban rehabilitation and two according to the criterion of capital transfer in an amount equal to or greater than 350 thousand euros, for the acquisition of units of participation in investment funds or venture capital funds aimed at the capitalization of companies, which are constituted under Portuguese law.
In cumulative terms since 2012, most Brazilian investment through gold visas was made through the purchase of real estate worth 500 thousand Euros or more, amounting to over 660 million Euros, followed by capital transfers (over 181 million Euros).
As for gold visas granted according to the criterion of creating at least 10 jobs, Brazil adds up to three (one in 2018 and two in 2019).
Since the ARI program was launched, 6,497,529,571.45 euros have been raised through this instrument. Of this amount, most corresponds to the purchase of real estate, which totaled in August €5,830,483,944.06, and the acquisition for urban rehabilitation amounted to €478,605,620.84.
The investment resulting from the capital transfer is 667,045,627.39 euros.
Since the creation of this instrument, which aims to attract foreign investment, 11,060 ARI have been assigned: two in 2012, 494 in 2013, 1,526 in 2014, 766 in 2015, 1,414 in 2016, 1,351 in 2017, 1,409 in 2018, 1,245 in 2019, 1,182 in 2020, 865 in 2021 and 806 in 2022.
In almost 10 years of the program (October 2012), 10,222 visas have been granted through the purchase of real estate, of which 1,338 for urban rehabilitation.
By requirement of capital transfer, the visas granted were 816 and by job creation 22.
