Swiss army trains in Portugal with the European Union

A dozen helicopter pilots and their crews will be whirring their rotors in the Iberian Peninsula this June. This is the first time Swiss troops have taken part in this type of exercise, conducted under the aegis of Brussels.

Beja, south-east of Lisbon, with its crenellated castle and Mediterranean climate. And its military base “number 11”, one of the main headquarters of the Portuguese Air Force.

From June 7 to 21, the military base will also be a Swiss hub, hosting 32 Swiss military personnel. The aim of the maneuver, which begins this Wednesday:

“to improve training in the field of international cooperation, collaboration with ground troops in a difficult context, and to consolidate tactical air transport procedures”.

This is the first time Swiss military personnel have taken part in this international exercise, which has been conducted by the European Union since 2009.
