In case of loss, theft, or a damaged citizen card, it is possible to renew it online, provided that you are over 25 years old.
The Citizen’s Card online renewal service, available since May 2019 for people over 25, can be used to request a second copy of the card in case the document is lost, stolen or damaged.
If the reason for renewal is due to one of the above, you must first cancel the card before requesting a new document. To request the cancellation of the CC, you can do it online through the ePortugal portal, or by phone, through the Citizen’s Card Line +351 210 990 111, available 24/7. Then you can request a 2nd copy and the new card will have the same validity as the original card.
The online renewal is a service available on the ePortugal portal, accessible through authentication, using the Mobile Digital Key or a valid Citizen’s Card inserted in a card reader, using the respective PIN codes of the card.
You can choose between a normal, urgent or extremely urgent CC request. In the case of the normal CC request, you can choose to receive the new card at your home address. For the urgent or extremely urgent request, you will have to select a counter to pick it up (extremely urgent only available at the DIC of the Justice Campus or at the Porto LC).
For citizens living abroad, the card is sent to the Consulate of the area of residence that, if available, sends the CC to the address associated with the card.
In 2022, 30,701 citizen cards were renewed online.
