The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has announced that there is a very high risk of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in all regions of mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago.

On Saturday, mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago will remain with very high and high levels of exposure to this radiation.

In the Azores archipelago, the island of Flores (western group) is currently at high risk, while Faial and Terceira (central group) and Sao Miguel (eastern group) are at moderate risk.

On Saturday, Flores will be at moderate risk, Terceira and Faial at high risk and Sao Miguel at very high risk.

The ultraviolet radiation scale has five levels, from extreme to low risk.

For areas where the risk is very high, the IPMA recommends the use of sunglasses with UV filters, a hat, a T-shirt, an umbrella and sun cream, and recommends that children avoid exposure to the sun.
