Portugal’s minister of infrastructure said on Wednesday that the government was finishing assessing the proposals that ANA presented for operational improvements at Lisbon airport and guaranteed a commitment to solutions to alleviate difficulties in the summer.

João Galamba was speaking during a hearing before the Economy, Public Works, Planning and Housing Committee in parliament, which is taking place this morning and where he is being heard on the ministry’s general policy and other current issues.

“We know that there are problems to be solved, and we are committed to solutions. Considering the summer season that now begins, ANAC [the National Civil Aviation Authority] is working with stakeholders to take all possible actions to ensure the operational improvement at Lisbon airport in terms of air traffic and movements, but also passengers,” he said.

The minister also said that the government was “finishing the evaluation of the proposals” that ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal presented, following the notification to present the Investment Plan for operational improvements in Lisbon.

“This is a complex challenge. We know that Lisbon airport operates at the limit of its capacity. And also because of this any intervention will have to be carefully thought out, minimising impacts and operational problems,” he stressed.

He also gave assurances that the government was working to ensure that “ANA meets its investment obligations as soon as possible” so that Lisbon airport can meet demand until a future airport solution is defined.
