University residence in Lisbon evacuated due to toxic substance

A suspected chemical intoxication led to the evacuation of a building on Conde Redondo Street in central Lisbon during Tuesday morning, as confirmed by the Lisbon Fire Department.

According to the same source, more than 20 personnel are on site, supported by nine vehicles.

The Fire Department informed that the building is a university residence and that at least three young people were assisted on site.

“We were called due to a chemical substance that was released into the atmosphere. Upon our arrival, the building had already been evacuated,” a source from the Lisbon Fire Department told Lusa, adding that “there were strange odors” that led to the emergency services being called.

“At this moment, we still don’t know who applied the substance; we only know that it is dangerous for the respiratory tract,” the source added in a statement around 11:00 AM.

The National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) was also called, having assisted at least three people, according to data from the fire department, which indicated that teams from both entities remain on site.
