Almost 1.2 million people checked at borders and 172 refused entry

Almost 1.2 million people have been checked at Portuguese borders since the start of document control in the context of World Youth Day (WYD), with 172 being refused entry, according to data released today.

Document checks at air, sea and land borders in the framework of WYD entered into force on July 22 and are being carried out in a selective and targeted manner based on intelligence and risk analysis.

A balance sheet made by the Internal Security System (SSI) indicates that 17,715 vehicles were controlled at land borders, 1,745 vessels at sea and 6,040 aircraft at air borders until Friday.

According to the SSI, 110 people were refused entry at land borders and 62 at air borders, most of them for lack of a valid visa, failure to prove the purpose of the stay, prohibition of entry into the Schengen area and lack of a visa suitable for the intended purpose.

The SSI also indicated that 63,137 people have been checked since July 22 at land borders and 80,699 passengers at sea borders by SEF and GNR, while at airports SEF and PSP have checked 1,047,932 people.

Document checks at air, sea and land borders in the context of WYD will be carried out until next Monday.

Lisbon is hosting the World Youth Day, with the presence of Pope Francis and which, until Sunday, brings together thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.
