Anti-immigration demonstration brings together around 100 people in downtown Porto

Around 100 people gathered today in Praça D. João I, in Porto, for the demonstration “Less Immigration, More Housing”, organized by the far-right group 1143, which will travel through some streets to Avenida dos Aliados.

On the social network X, the 1143 group, whose spokesperson is far-right activist Mário Machado, called on “all patriots to be present” in Porto to show “opposition to the invasion of immigrants, which is the main reason for the brutal rise in housing prices”.

Wielding placards reading “less immigration and more housing” and chanting “I’ve been Portuguese since 1143”, most of the demonstrators were dressed in black and soon began blowing up firecrackers in the square, as well as clashing with passers-by who criticized them.

This demonstration took place 90 minutes after another, called “Against Fascism, More and Better Housing”, organized by the Housing Today association, which also took place in Porto, in Praça dos Poveiros.

The PSP is on the ground with a strong police force that will accompany the demonstrators as they make their way through downtown Porto.

Hundreds unite in Porto against fascism and in solidarity with immigrants

Several hundred people gathered today in Praça dos Poveiros, in Porto, to “fight against fascism” and in solidarity with the immigrant community.

Chanting slogans such as “25 de Abril always, fascism never again” and “Fascists, your time has come, immigrants stay and you go”, around 500 people responded to the associations’ call and gathered in Praça dos Poveiros to “fight against fascism, racism and xenophobia”.

A few hours before a demonstration organized by the far-right group 1143 began in Praça D. João I, about 500 metres away, the demonstrators armed themselves with red carnations and joined in chants.

“Workers united against exploitation”, “Racism is no joke” and “Racists and Fascists out of here” were some of the placards displayed by the demonstrators.

No incidents have been reported so far, PSP officers at the scene told Lusa.
