A concert by Paulo de Carvalho, a “large-scale” theatrical creation and initiatives to remember José Afonso are the highlights of the 50th anniversary of April 25 in the municipality of Sines (Setúbal), the town hall has announced.
The commemorative program, put together by Sines Town Hall in partnership with various local entities, focuses mainly on the night of the 24th and the 25th of April, with “major events in public spaces”.
Among the initiatives planned is the show “Levante”, by the Teatro do Mar company, with the participation of the local community, presented by the organizers as “a large-scale creation” that will run through the streets of the historic center on the evening of the 24th and end in the bay of Sines”.
Under the artistic direction of director Julieta Aurora Santos, the show, which is a kind of “manual for a revolution”, also features “an aerial ballet over the sea” by the Spanish company Sylphes Aerial Ballet.
This will be followed at 00:00 on the 25th, still in the bay of Sines, by a fireworks display to “welcome Freedom Day”, and a concert by DJ Kura to extend the party.
On the evening of the 25th, the celebrations include a concert by singer-songwriter Paulo de Carvalho, author of the song “E Depois do Adeus”, one of the ‘passwords’ of the Carnation Revolution.
Another highlight of the program is the “José Afonso – Music and Freedom” initiative, which, between the 16th and 19th of this month, recalls “the memory of one of the most brilliant Portuguese musicians”, with an exhibition, book presentations, a lecture and a concert by Filipa Pais at the Sines Arts Centre (CAS).
The Municipal Archives will also contribute “to the memory of the revolution and local life during that period”, with the Tertúlia da Liberdade (Freedom Tertulia) on the 20th at 2:30 p.m. in the Sala das Armas do Castelo, and the presentation of the book “Projeto Sines” (Sines Project), by Maria Fernanda Rollo and Pedro Serra, on the 26th at 5:00 p.m. in the CAS.
Also in the area of culture, the public can visit the exhibition “Liberdade? Ou Liberdades”, on display at CAS from the 23rd to the 30th, which shows “how this date can be appropriated by a group of young artists from the region”.
The flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall, at 10:00, and the solemn session of the Municipal Assembly commemorating the date, at 11:00, in the CAS auditorium, are also highlights of the program on the 25th.
The celebrations also include cinema, literature, theater, dance, a gastronomic exhibition by the Sines Local Trade Association and sporting events organized by local clubs.
