Around 6.9 million condoms were distributed in 2023, 33% more than in the previous year, according to data from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), which today launched a campaign to encourage the consistent use of this contraceptive method.
Released on International Condom Day, data from the DGS’s information program and free distribution of preventive materials show that, in addition to male (external) and female (internal) condoms, around 1.9 million packs of lubricating gel were also distributed, representing an increase of 15% compared to 2022.
To mark the date, the Directorate-General for Health, through the National Health Programs in the areas of STI and HIV infection, and Viral Hepatitis, is launching a campaign to encourage consistent condom use, through social networks and websites.
“The use of condoms is one of the most effective forms of protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In addition, condoms can also be used to prevent pregnancy,” the DGS said in a statement.
During 2022, and according to notifications up to June 30, 2023, 804 new cases of HIV infection were diagnosed in Portugal. In 91.9% of cases, transmission occurred by sexual means.
The DGS stresses the importance of promoting sex education and facilitating access to condoms, which are highly effective in preventing sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies.
The Directorate-General for Health’s program of free distribution of preventive and informative materials has the support of non-governmental organizations, educational establishments, health centers, hospitals and prisons.
