Two hundred and eighty artists and guests from 11 regions of the world will be present at this year’s edition of the Artes à Rua festival in Évora, with 26 shows between September 5 and 10.
Celina da Piedade, Duarte, Mallu Magalhães, Nancy Vieira, Oumou Sangaré and Pedro Mafama are some of the artists who are part of the musical program for the 5th edition of this initiative, promoted by the Évora City Council, the municipality said in a statement today.
“The decolonization of thought” and “Gender equality” are the themes of this edition, which includes a varied programme over the six days of the festival, the organization said.
During the event, Évora’s squares and streets “are places of affection and enjoyment of music from many parts of the world, resulting from many aesthetic trends, which dialog with traditions, rescuing them from the depths of time, in a permanent dynamic of building the identity of peoples,” the promoters point out.
According to the organization, the same streets and squares are places for encounters mediated by music, dance, theater, performance, the new circus, and even a series of live podcasts.
According to the promoters, Artes à Rua’s proposals are divided into 38 moments with two central themes: “The decolonization of thought” and “Gender equality”.
In addition, this edition will welcome 280 artists and guests from 11 regions of the world: Afghanistan, Angola, Argentina, Brazil, Cape Verde, Spain – Galicia and the Basque Country -, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mozambique and Portugal, for 26 shows from various cultural areas ranging from music, theater, dance, performance and new circus, the organization said.
Four workshops, including two heritage walks, two talks, three live podcasts, a book presentation and a training session for artists and professionals interested in acquiring more knowledge in the area of career management and agency to help internationalize their projects, organized by WHY Portugal, are other initiatives planned.
The opening day program includes the show “Assim Devera Eu Ser”, which presents Amália’s songs as “proverbial stories that teach as much as they enchant”, and a concert in the public garden with Oumou Sangaré, from Mali, and Celina da Piedade, who has Uxia as her guest.
On the 6th, there will be theater with Manifesto Funesto, an electronic opera by Vanda R Rodrigues, and in the evening there will be concerts by Puta da Silva and Pedro Mafama, while on the 7th there will be performances by Mallu Magalhães and Duarte.
The program also includes a performance by Nancy Vieira, from Cape Verde, on the 8th, and the sounds of Africa, on the 9th, with the show Batida presents Neon Colonialismo, from Angola, followed by Super Mama Djombo with Karyna Gomes, from Guinea-Bissau.
The initiative, which fills Évora’s streets and squares with culture, with all activities free of charge, closes on the 10th with Monda.
The festival is an initiative of the Municipality of Évora, European Capital of Culture in 2027.
