Azorean government opens applications for support due to bad weather

The Government of the Azores has opened applications to compensate for losses resulting from the bad weather recorded in June in the municipalities of Ribeira Grande and Praia da Vitória, according to orders published today in the Official Journal.

According to the Azorean government, the deadline for submitting applications is “set at 15 working days from the date of publication of this order”.

The applications come under the scope of the support provided for in the legal and financial regime for climate emergency support for situations of loss and damage to property resulting from extreme weather events.

In both cases, requests for financial support are made by submitting an application form, which is available on the website of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action.

On June 13, the Government of the Azores announced that it had decided to activate the legal and financial support scheme for the climate emergency to support families affected by the bad weather on June 2 and 3 on the islands of Terceira and São Miguel.

The heavy rain that hit the municipality of Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel, at the beginning of last month caused more than half a million euros worth of damage to homes, vehicles and public property, according to an initial estimate by the municipality.

Around 20 families had to be relocated in the municipality due to the heavy rain that occurred in the late afternoon, which also caused damage to vehicles, establishments and public roads, with no injuries reported.

A family also had to be relocated on Terceira Island following the heavy rain.
