The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) has issued yellow warnings until Friday for the nine islands of the Azores, due to forecasts of sometimes heavy rainfall, wind and sea turbulence.
According to the IPMA, for the islands of the Western group (Flores and Corvo), the warning of “sometimes heavy rainfall, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms” will be in force between 23:00 local time today (00:00 Friday in Lisbon) and 08:00 Friday (09:00 in Lisbon).
In the Eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the same level, also for “sometimes heavy precipitation, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms”, is valid between 20:00 local time today (21:00 in Lisbon) and 11:00 on Friday (12:00 in Lisbon).
The two islands will also be under a yellow warning due to wind (southwest direction, turning west) from 20:00 today (21:00 in Lisbon) to 14:00 on Friday (15:00 in Lisbon) and due to sea waves (westerly waves) from 08:00 to 17:00 on Friday (09:00 and 18:00 in Lisbon).
The IPMA’s yellow warning will also be in force for the islands of the central group of the Azores (Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa) between 17:00 today (18:00 in Lisbon) and 11:00 on Friday (12:00 in Lisbon), due to the forecast of sometimes heavy rain, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
On Wednesday, the IPMA upgraded to orange the warning it had issued the previous day for the central group of the Azores because of the wind, due to the passage of depression Olivia.
