The man was found 800 meters from the coast, west of Forte do Cão, in Vila Praia de âncora.
The body of the 70-year-old recreational fisherman who had been missing since Monday in Caminha was found today almost a kilometer west of Forte do Cão, in Vila Praia de Âncora, revealed the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
“During the search operations, the body was detected about 0.5 miles, approximately 0.8km, west of Forte do Cão and was subsequently transported by the high-speed boats of the Caminha and Viana do Castelo Local Commands to the quay at the mouth of the River Minho, where the death was declared by the Health Delegate,” the AMN said in a statement.
The AMN also states that “the Public Prosecutor’s Office was contacted, and the body was later transported to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Viana do Castelo by the Caminha Volunteer Fire Brigade, following the efforts of the Judicial Police”.
The search operations, coordinated by the Captain of the Port and Local Commander of the Caminha Maritime Police, involved members of the Caminha Maritime Police Local Command, a vessel from the Caminha Maritime Police Local Command and a vessel from the Viana do Castelo Maritime Police Local Command.
The AMN says that, “according to what we have been able to ascertain, the recreational angler, a 70-year-old man, left home to practice the activity without returning”.
The “last sighting” of the fisherman, in the coastal area between Vila Praia de Âncora and Moledo beach, was recorded at 10:00 on Monday, the Caminha port captain revealed on Tuesday.
The fact that the fisherman’s car was found on the route between Vila Praia de Âncora and Moledo, “around 200 meters from the coastline”, was “one of the factors” that led the authorities “to concentrate their search efforts” on that location in that area.
On Tuesday, the AMN revealed that it was searching for a recreational fisherman who had gone missing “after allegedly going out for recreational fishing in the coastal area of Moledo, between Moledo beach and the Chapel of Santo Isidoro, in the municipality of Caminha”.
