The Brazilian Federal Police said today that they had arrested a Portuguese citizen at Rio de Janeiro International Airport with 4.5 kilos of cocaine hidden in a belt.
According to a statement released by the Brazilian police, the Portuguese citizen, who has not been identified, was planning to board a commercial flight to Portugal.
The arrest took place at the end of Tuesday afternoon, after officers from the Federal Police Special Police Station at Galeão International Airport carried out a routine inspection in which they identified the suspicious belt attached to the woman’s body.
“After removing the object and detecting the contents inside the belt, a white powder was found which, when subjected to a narcotics test, tested positive for cocaine,” and the woman was arrested in the act, the statement said.
The Portuguese woman was taken to the police station for routine procedures and sent to the prison system in Rio de Janeiro, where she will remain at the disposal of the justice system. The woman will answer for the crime of transnational drug trafficking, which carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison in Brazil.
