On June 10, Lisbon’s Casa do Alentejo celebrated its first centenary and was awarded the city’s Medal of Honor by the Lisbon City Council.
At the award ceremony, Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon (CML), was accompanied by several members of the municipal executive.
“One of Lisbon’s great riches lies in its diversity, and the presence of Alentejo in our city can only make us proud,” reads the welcome vote unanimously approved at the municipality’s public meeting on January 25.
The city of Lisbon “is recognized for the dignified work that Casa do Alentejo has developed and which is relevant in the local, national and international panorama”.
Founded in 1923, Casa do Alentejo “was subject to the constraints of the Estado Novo”. Despite these many restrictions, it maintained its activity, focusing on: the elementary school for girls, between 1942 and 1870; the canteen for the daughters of low-income Alentejo couples; training activities and pedagogical courses.
The Municipal Medal of Merit honors individuals or groups, national or foreign, whose actions bring notable benefits to the city of Lisbon, the improvement of living conditions for its population, the development or dissemination of its art, the dissemination or deepening of its history, or other elements of notable importance that justify such recognition.
